Today's grog has very little in common with its prototype. Now it’s juice or tea with a little rum added, and not the usual 50/50. But since then, many recipes have appeared that gave the drink new flavor profiles and made it much more interesting. In fact, today everything that contains rum, citrus fruits and other additives is called grog. Below we have collected the most interesting recipes, which you can use to get a very tasty and healthy drink.

By the way, about the benefits. Rum perfectly promotes the absorption of vitamin C. And citrus juice or their zest can boast of a huge amount of it. Grog is especially useful in the winter months, when the body is constantly at risk of catching a cold. Also, it will be very useful for spring vitamin deficiency.

Consumption should be limited to one cup per day. It is this dose that has the best effect on health and helps maintain it in good condition. Now let’s start figuring out how to make grog at home.

Grog classic

It's very simple. We will need:

  • Any dark rum – 200 ml;
  • Pure water – 200 ml;
  • Lemon or orange.

Preparing grog will not cause any difficulties:

  1. Bring water to a boil;
  2. Add finely chopped citrus fruit there;
  3. Pour rum into water;
  4. Cook for a couple more minutes;
  5. Remove from heat, wait until it cools down and you can drink.

Modern simple grog

This grog recipe is almost the absolute basis for all other recipes. Small changes are possible, but they are so insignificant that in the end only the shades of taste will change, and not the taste itself.

Contains tea. If desired, it can be replaced with any dark rum. By analogy with this, you can make any recipe alcoholic grog, replacing rum good tea. The proportions are the same.

There is one more rule: the amount of rum and the main diluting liquid are always identical. It doesn’t matter what it will be diluted with: water or citrus juice. If the amount of rum is 1 liter, then water must be added accordingly.

  • 0.5 l of water;
  • 4 tbsp. l. tea;
  • 5 black peppercorns;
  • 3 peas of allspice;
  • On the tip of a knife, nutmeg;

There is one point that you need to know: grog is always drunk hot or warm. The primary purpose of the drink is to warm and disinfect. Cold grog is considered hopelessly spoiled.

  6. Pour into wide glasses and present the drink to the women. They will be delighted!

A small note

As you have already noticed, in all recipes you should first turn off the heat, and only then add alcohol. This is due to the fact that alcohol boils at a lower temperature than water. And it boils away extremely quickly. Therefore, if you heat rum or any other alcohol together with water, then all the alcohols will boil away faster than you can cool it. As a result, you may end up with something tasteless. Therefore, be sure to follow this advice.

On the Internet you can find recipes where rum should be boiled along with all other ingredients. But when preparing such drinks, you must be 100% sure that they will really be tasty. Otherwise, the taste may very much disappoint you! Now let's continue.

Cognac grog

This method is suitable for those who have cognac at home, but absolutely no rum.

  • Cognac – 100 ml;
  • A quarter of a small lemon;
  • 100 ml water;
  • Cinnamon, cloves and allspice are just at the tip of a knife.

The preparation is very simple: boil water with lemon and spices. After boiling, boil them for a couple of minutes. After turning off the heat, you can add cognac. This should be done in a thin stream or over a knife. You need to drink it while the drink is hot. As you understand, cheap cognac will not work. It's better to buy good drink. Great alternative will be homemade cognac.

Coffee grog

This recipe will show you how to make something similar to liqueur. But all the same, it will not be him, but a healthy and tasty grog. To begin, prepare:

  • 100 ml water;
  • 100 ml dark rum;
  • 3 tsp. coffee;
  • 1 tbsp. l. condensed milk;
  • 2 tsp. Sahara.

The preparation is slightly different from all other recipes:

  1. Brew coffee;
  2. After it has cooled a little, pour rum into it and add sugar;
  3. When the sugar has dissolved, the drink can be poured into a container with condensed milk.

In this case, under no circumstances should you add milk to boiling water - it will simply curdle and all that remains to be done is to pour your labors down the drain.

Conclusion

Most grog recipes always contain citrus fruits. Even if they are not listed there, you can be sure that you will definitely not spoil the drink with a slice of lemon or orange. Its main task is to supply your body with a good portion of vitamin C.

Essentially, grog is a drink that contains orange or lemon and rum. The latter can be replaced with strong tea if you need non-alcoholic grog.

Grog should always be served hot. This is a rule that should be strictly followed. Otherwise, you'll end up with a no-name cocktail. Moreover, its taste will be in great doubt.

Let's start with the history of the famous winter cocktail. It came to us from England back in the 16th century, when a rare adventurer, pirate and at the same time vice-admiral of the English fleet (non-standard combination, isn’t it?) Francis Drake decided to take a lot of rum on board (so that it would help instill courage in English sailors ). And the history of the creation of grog continued in the 18th century, when the commander of the British Royal Navy, Edward Vernon (he had the nickname Old Grog, because he never went without a groger - a thick waterproof raincoat) decided to dilute rum with tea so that the sailors would be brave, but still sober. Actually, rum and tea are the basis of the most popular warming drink. Nowadays grog is made with brandy, whiskey, cognac, rice vodka, and is completely non-alcoholic. Butter, various liqueurs, and milk are added to it. But is this right? And does it look like that same sailor's drink? Not a fact. Try making real English grog by Vernon and Drake. Yes, yes, unique recipe preserved!

Write down:

  • brew 200 ml of tea;
  • pour 50 ml of rum (dark) into it;
  • add 4 pieces of sugar, cloves, and a few cardamom seeds to the mixture;
  • Squeeze the juice of a piece of lemon into the almost finished cocktail.

Your drink is ready!

Grog is ready. The drink is very strong, so you can’t drink more than one glass of grog at a time. If desired, by the way, the amount of vodka can be reduced and the amount of water increased.

How to drink grog?

“Grogomaniacs” (most often these are people who understood how the drink differs from punch or mulled wine and fell in love with it) came up with rules for drinking grog:

  • the drink must be served hot;
  • It is best to choose tall glasses for it;
  • grog is very strong, so it should not be abused;
  • ready winter cocktail When serving, be sure to garnish with a slice of orange.

Until 1970, grog was included in the daily diet of sailors in the British Navy, which made the drink recognizable throughout the world. I propose to consider the recipe for classic grog and the best alternative option with spices, honey and fruits. Cooking does not take much time.

Grog- This alcoholic drink strength 15-20%, made by mixing rum with water and sugar in certain proportions. In some variations, in addition to the above-mentioned ingredients, the composition includes lemon juice and spices (cloves, ginger, cinnamon, mint). Grog is served hot. It has been used by sailors for centuries different countries as a means to prevent scurvy. In terms of its warming properties, grog is similar to mulled wine (hot wine).

Historical information. Grog appeared thanks to the admiral of the British fleet Edward Vernon (1684-1757), whose habit of walking in a waterproof cape ( English name grogram cloak) sailors called Old Grog. Due to constant drunkenness, the admiral ordered the daily portion of rum to be diluted with water (fleet employees in those days were given about 240 ml of rum with a strength of 80 degrees). Over time, sugar and lemon juice were added to the composition to improve the taste.

Classic grog recipe

Ingredients:

  • dark rum – 200 ml (Jamaican or Bacardi is best);
  • boiled water – 400 ml;
  • lemon – 2 pieces;
  • sugar – 4 teaspoons.

Preparation:

1. Pour water into a saucepan and bring to a boil.

2. Separately squeeze the juice from two lemons.

3. Reduce heat, pour rum into the water in a thin stream, then add lemon juice and sugar, mix well.

4. Boil the homemade grog for 2-3 minutes until the sugar is completely dissolved, stirring with a kitchen spatula.

5. Remove the drink from the stove and pour into glasses.

Grog should only be drunk hot, in slow sips (possibly through a straw), so as not to burn your throat.

Classic homemade grog

Alternative recipe for homemade grog

Unlike classic version Spices are used to improve the taste.

Ingredients:

  • dark rum (cognac) – 60 ml;
  • lemon juice – 40 ml;
  • hot water (tea) – 60 ml;
  • sugar – 1 teaspoon;
  • cloves – 2 buds;
  • cinnamon – 1 stick.

Rum can be replaced with cognac, and water with hot black tea. The authors of some recipes add fresh mint, but it suppresses the taste of the alcoholic base, so I don’t use it.

Grog with cognac and honey

The cooking technology is no different from the previous version; spices (cinnamon and cloves) are added at the very end before pouring into glasses. You can also add a tablespoon of liquid honey and a few slices of fruit, such as oranges or lemons, to the finished drink. More details in the video.
