How many grams of coffee do you need for a cup of espresso?

  • Espresso helps to invigorate and ward off sleepiness in the morning or after a hearty meal, as caffeine helps release adrenaline.
  • Espresso after meals improves digestion.
  • Drinking espresso between meals can help reduce appetite. This does not mean that coffee should be drunk instead of food, but replacing a cup of espresso and a fruit dessert for a hearty afternoon snack is quite acceptable.

Description of espresso

Italian espresso can be described as a concentrated beverage served in a small cup, made on demand, extracted from ground roasted coffee beans using hot water at a set pressure, but in a short amount of time.

The espresso is covered with a persistent cream (a few millimeters thick) with a fine texture, devoid of any large bubbles, its color varies from light brown to reddish brown. The volume in a cup can vary considerably (even in the range of 15 to 50 ml) depending on personal taste and preference. Outside Italy, the volume may be even higher, despite the fact that this will affect the sensory functions of the drink.

Why do we drink coffee and espresso in particular?

Everyone knows about the effect of coffee on the nervous system. Its main characteristics are velvety, body, intense aroma and a moderate dose of caffeine, which pleasantly stimulates us, helps us stay awake, stimulates intelligence, memory and concentration, enhances reflexes and aids digestion.

In addition to the pleasant tonic effect, espresso leads to a powerful sense of pleasure associated with emotions through our senses: visual (creams), olfactory (aromas), gustatory (characteristics of the drink), tactile (firmness and roundness perceived in the mouth).

Caffeine is highly soluble in water. However, short-term contact of coffee with water allows you to extract only up to 70% of the caffeine. The so-called "long" American-style coffees seem "lighter" than espresso, but instead contain a significantly higher dose of caffeine (on the order of 120-250 mg). This is because more coffee is used per cup (about 10 g) and during the brewing time of more than 6 minutes, the coffee grounds become almost all of their caffeine. Classic Italian mochas get slightly more caffeine than espresso - 70 to 130 mg.

A cup of espresso contains a small amount of calories - 2 to 3 kcal. However, the addition of sweeteners in the form of sugar (about 12 kcal per 5 g) and milk (about 0.64 kcal per ml of whole milk) significantly increases calories. Therefore, a good cup of cappuccino with 100 ml of whole milk, with the addition of even one cube of sugar, contains about 80 kcal.

For the first time, a drink under this name was distributed at The Coffee Connection in Massachusetts. In 1994, the chain was taken over by Starbucks, which added the drink to its product line.

It took about twenty-five seconds to prepare the drink, while it was necessary to pour coffee into the machine, and then pass a stream of hot water through a special filter. In this way, espresso could preserve the beneficial vitamins and minerals found in coffee beans. If it took more than thirty seconds to brew the drink, then caffeine, water and tannins got into it.

To serve espresso coffee, use only porcelain cups with a volume of no more than forty milliliters. For such a volume of a mug, you only need seven grams of ground coffee. This coffee drink has a rich aroma with a taste of light coffee bitterness, in which there are slight notes of sweetness and sourness.

Today there are a lot of varieties of espresso. The most popular are:

  • doppino (double espresso);
  • kon-panna (whipped cream is added);
  • coretto (added liquor);
  • latte (3: 7 ratio of milk and coffee);
  • latte macchiato (prepared in three layers: milk, espresso, frothy milk);
  • lungo (weak, since double dose of hot water is used);
  • macchiato (half a teaspoon of frothed milk is put);
  • fredo (cold and sweet with a small ice cube);
  • macchiato fredo (like fredo, only with the addition of milk);
  • ristretto (very strong coffee);
  • romance (put a slice of lemon or its zest).

Espresso coffee is considered a very strong drink, so experienced baristas advise drinking this coffee with water. To do this, you first need to drink one glass of water, and then enjoy the coffee taste.

Classic espresso coffee contains the following ingredients:

  • roasted coffee beans;
  • salt;
  • granulated sugar;
  • pure water.

The nutritional value of the product consists in the content of vitamin PP, minerals (calcium, phosphorus, potassium), ash, starch, saturated fatty acids and water.

  1. Americano coffee is the same espresso, only diluted with hot water with a volume of about one hundred and fifty milliliters.
  2. When diluted, Americano takes on a fruity flavor. Espresso is stronger and has a rich aroma and bitterness.
  3. The Americano is poured into large cups and the espresso is served in small mugs.
  4. Unlike espresso, Americano coffee requires the addition of milk and sugar.

How to choose, brew and drink espresso correctly?

To choose the right one, and then brew a delicious espresso, you need to know a few simple rules:

  1. The coffee beans must be deeply roasted so that the packaging says “for espresso”.
  2. Store grains only in a glass container with a sealed lid and away from sunlight.
  3. The grinding of beans for a coffee machine and a coffee maker should be medium, and for a Turk - fine.
  4. The coffee machine must first be heated by pouring hot water into it.
  5. The water temperature for making espresso should be up to ninety degrees.

As soon as a foam begins to form on the surface, the Turk should be removed from the heat and a pinch of table salt should be added there. After the foam has settled, the coffee must be reheated to form a foam, and then removed from the stove again. Then heat the coffee again, and then you can serve it to the table.
