Before the Second World War, these flights were a very risky business, and one of the most important transit hubs for transatlantic airlines at that time was an air base on the left bank of the Shannon Estuary, the longest river in Ireland, near the village of Foynes, located at the mouth of River Robertstown in County Limerick ( province of Munster).
