Rolled oats porridge is one of the most popular morning meals. It contains a huge amount of vitamins that are beneficial to the body and ensures the proper functioning of the intestines and metabolism. It has long been proven that a person who eats oatmeal porridge for breakfast has no problems with either the digestive or cardiovascular system. In this article, we will look at popular recipes for preparing oatmeal dishes with water, and also give important tips on maintaining proportions that will help you prepare delicious porridge.

Determining proportions

An important feature of rolled oats as a product is the presence of a sufficient amount of calories, which are absorbed very slowly by the body, as a result of which they do not turn into fat and provide energy for many hours. The feeling of fullness does not go away for a long time. However, to get not only benefits, but also pleasure from breakfast, it is important to learn how to properly cook a dish of oatmeal in compliance with all proportions. Important rules for preparing rolled oats are as follows.

  • The grains themselves should not be washed, since the manufacturer independently disinfects them immediately before packaging.
  • It is not recommended to use old cereals for food consumption, since they deteriorate during long-term storage and the bitter taste affects the final result.
  • The dosage of a particular component depends on the final consistency. For example, if you need to prepare breakfast for a very young child, a glass of cereal should be filled with three glasses of water. To obtain a medium consistency, a ratio of 2:1 is suitable. A thick mass is obtained with the same number of components.
  • Since rolled oats tend to increase in volume, one glass of cereal is enough for three servings of porridge.
  • The cooking time for oatmeal depends on its size. Large grains should be cooked for twenty minutes, small ones will be ready in five. You can determine the level of readiness by eye.
  • You can store the finished porridge in the refrigerator for no more than twenty hours, preferably in a ceramic container. The cooled mass is thicker.
  • It should be remembered that real rolled oats are very far from instant porridge. In such packs, the cereal is too finely chopped, therefore, the beneficial fibers are destroyed, and such a breakfast will not bring the expected amount of benefits.

Such food is not suitable for diabetics and people on a diet, as it contains a huge amount of sugar and is equivalent in calories to chocolate cake. It is for this reason that nutritionists recommend using a natural product rather than a packaged substitute.

Cooking methods

Cooking oatmeal porridge in water is quite simple; the whole process takes about fifteen minutes. Additional ingredients can include a variety of products, such as milk, pieces of fruit, chocolate and much more. Below we will present some of the most popular step-by-step recipes that can be prepared quickly.

In a saucepan

You can cook oatmeal porridge in a saucepan or microwave. The list of ingredients does not change, only the process differs. It will be much easier to cook the dish in a thick-bottomed pan.

On the water. This recipe is standard and most common. Some people prefer to replace water with milk in similar proportions, thus making the porridge more tasty and sweet.

Components:

  • 1 tbsp. rolled oatmeal;
  • 2.5 tbsp. water;
  • 1 table. l. granulated sugar;
  • a pinch of salt.

Preparation:

  • water is poured into the pan and brought to a boil over high heat, after which granulated sugar and salt should be added inside;
  • Next you need to add the flakes, mix everything thoroughly and reduce the heat level to a minimum;
  • keep on fire for about fifteen minutes until cooked;
  • To make the porridge even tastier, it should be covered with a lid and left to simmer for some time, and before serving, add butter.

With honey, apple and dried apricots

In this recipe, the porridge is poured not with water, but with diluted honey.

Components:

  • 1 tbsp. rolled oatmeal;
  • 2-3 tbsp. l. honey;
  • 100 grams of nuts;
  • 50 grams of dried apricots;
  • 1 apple.

Preparation:

  • to begin with, honey is diluted with water until a liquid consistency is obtained, then oatmeal is poured with this mixture and finely crushed nuts, pre-soaked dried apricots and an apple, chopped on a fine grater, are added inside;
  • In terms of time, such porridge cooks for about fifteen minutes;
  • By the way, this recipe can also be used by people on a diet, not only for breakfast, but also for dinner or lunch.

With pumpkin

Pumpkin is a very healthy vegetable that will add amazing flavor and zest to oatmeal.

Components:

  • 1 tbsp. rolled oatmeal;
  • 2.5 tbsp. water;
  • 150 grams of pumpkin;
  • 1 tbsp. l. granulated sugar;
  • salt to taste.

Preparation:

  • first of all, you should peel the pumpkin, cut it into cubes and boil it a little, simmering it in a frying pan with water;
  • in the meantime, you need to prepare the porridge by pouring the remaining ingredients into boiling water;
  • the porridge is cooked over low heat and a few minutes before it is ready, add pieces of pumpkin inside;
  • You will have to simmer the porridge for about five more minutes on low heat, then it can be served;
  • If desired, you can add some nuts.

In the microwave

Cooking rolled oats in the microwave is quite simple and quick. Everything will be ready literally within a few minutes.

Components:

  • 1.5 tbsp. water;
  • 1 tbsp. rolled oatmeal;
  • 1 tsp. granulated sugar;
  • salt to taste;
  • 1/2 tsp. butter.

The cooking process is as follows.

  • In this case, there is no need for pans; all you need is a deep bowl into which water is poured. Then oatmeal is poured in, which can be pre-ground in a coffee grinder if desired.
  • Finally, granulated sugar and salt are added inside, and the amount of sugar can be adjusted independently depending on taste preferences, and if desired, replaced with honey, in which case the dish will be much more aromatic and healthy. However, it should be remembered that honey is added after the plate is removed from the microwave.
  • All contents should be thoroughly mixed until a homogeneous mass is obtained; it is important that the oatmeal is completely covered with water.
  • Next, the bowl is placed in the microwave, the timer should be set for three minutes, and the power should be set to the maximum possible.
  • There is no need to cover the bowl with a plate, as water may leak out.
  • As soon as the time has expired, open the door and thoroughly mix the contents of the bowl. The fact is that heating does not occur completely evenly, so if the porridge is not stirred, it will remain raw on the sides.
  • As soon as all the necessary steps are completed, the door closes, and the porridge continues to heat for another three minutes, only at medium power.
  • Immediately before the meal, butter is added to the porridge, as well as, if desired, pieces of fruit, berries or nuts. Additional ingredients will diversify the taste of oatmeal porridge and make it more enjoyable.

Recipes for weight loss

Hercules porridge is the first recommended breakfast product for people on a diet. It is not only low in calories, but also very nutritious, so the feeling of fullness will remain throughout the morning, which will avoid additional meals and useless snacks.

On the water

This recipe is standard and forms the basis of all dietary oatmeal. An important nuance is replacing sugar with honey.

Components:

  • 1 tbsp. rolled oatmeal;
  • 2.5 tbsp. water;
  • salt to taste;
  • 1 tbsp. l. honey;
  • 1 apple.

Pour water into a thick-bottomed pan, bring to a boil and add salt. Next, add oatmeal and reduce the heat to medium. The porridge should be cooked for about fifteen minutes, then removed from the heat and cool slightly. Only after the dish has cooled slightly can you add honey, otherwise the healthy product will lose all its vitamins. Cut the apples into cubes and add to the porridge just before serving.

Hercules porridge is not the most favorite product among children and adults if consumed without various additives. But breakfast with such porridge becomes very healthy and satisfying at any age, and if you put some dried fruits, nuts or berries in it, you can turn the unpleasant cereal into a work of culinary art.

Cooking time

On water is an excellent recipe for a dietary diet, because even with the addition of honey and prunes or raisins, the flakes will retain their attractive properties. Some women note that by eating oatmeal for breakfast every day for a month, a smooth process of losing excess weight occurs.

Good to know! Stores sell many ready-made mixtures in portioned and large bags that can be prepared in 5-10 minutes. The manufacturer often adds dried fruits, dried berries, and spices to them. Porridges are steamed according to the instructions, and it is impossible to find a single recipe for them.

Also on the shelves you can find instant rolled oats, which differ from standard cereal in the degree of cut of the flakes - they are lighter and airier, so they are brewed in literally 5-7 minutes. In other cases, the cooking time for oatmeal porridge in water looks like this:

  • in the pan the liquid boils quite quickly - up to 10-15 minutes;
  • the poured cereal is boiled in about 18-20 minutes;
  • if the porridge is cooked in the oven, then it takes half an hour.

You can cook porridge quickly in a microwave oven. This will require about 10 minutes of time, taking into account the preparation of water.

How to properly cook oatmeal porridge in water

Hercules flakes, if they are not cooked, turn out dry, hard and lose all the charm of their taste. The same thing happens if you overcook them, only then the porridge becomes not the most pleasant in consistency.

Good to know! From different manufacturers, the flakes may have a different size, thickness, or shape, so porridge prepared using the same technology may turn out differently. The best way to deal with this is to practice and always choose a manufacturer you are familiar with.

The most common method of preparing oatmeal porridge in water looks like this:

  1. For 1 cup of porridge, take 2 cups of filtered water and a little salt. Sugar can be added as desired, or replaced with honey and dried fruits.
  2. The water is brought to active bubbling, then flakes are placed in it. They can be pre-rinsed, but rolled oats usually do not require careful preparation.
  3. If you take regular flakes, then after boiling they are boiled for 20 minutes, if you take quick cooking, then 5-7 minutes is enough. Don't forget to reduce the heat on the stove to medium, but so that the porridge gurgles slightly.
  4. After this, the product is salted and covered with a lid. You need to infuse the porridge and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. But not longer, otherwise it will begin to thicken greatly.

You need to infuse the porridge by removing it from the hot stove so that it does not burn. It must be stirred during cooking. After the specified time has elapsed, add a piece of natural butter to the rolled oats and mix well.

You can prepare delicious porridge, which will differ significantly in consistency from that cooked on the stove, in pots.

Hercules porridge in pots

  1. Pour 2 cups of water into a large pot and place a cup of rolled oats flakes.
  2. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees.
  3. Cook for 30 minutes.
  4. Add salt, sugar granules, a piece of butter and other additives to taste, let stand in the oven for 10 minutes (turn it off first).

Novice cooks do not always know the difference between boiled and baked oatmeal. But their taste is significantly different. Thus, the liquid in the baked product is much less noticeable, and the aroma is retained more fully.

Cooking porridge in the microwave

Good to know! The easiest way to prepare porridge in water with rolled oats is to use a microwave. Boiled water in the amount of 2 glasses is poured into a glass container and placed in the oven for 3-4 minutes. Then add a glass of flakes and cook them for 5-7 minutes at a power of 1000 or 800 W (100%).

Cooking in the microwave takes minimal time. After the porridge is ready, salt, sugar, and butter are added to it. You can also add dried fruits, but they should be soaked first.

Tricks of a true porridge lover!

There are several small nuances that will help make the porridge very tasty:

  • if the finished porridge is not eaten immediately, then you need to add a third less flakes to it, then it will not thicken too much;
  • leftover porridge can be used in cutlets, casseroles and even cookies, so you can simply put the product in the refrigerator and use it after a few hours;
  • When using rolled oats for weight loss, adding oil is not recommended;
  • The porridge will turn out even tastier if you pre-caramelize the peaches and apples - fry in sugar and butter for 15 minutes and add to the porridge.

Simple recipes for oatmeal porridge

Having a neutral taste, oatmeal “loves” different fillings. It turns out especially tasty with fresh or frozen berries - cherries, blueberries, strawberries. It is ideally complemented by apples, peaches and apricots, as well as all types of dried fruits and nuts. But there are other interesting recipes that will diversify the everyday dish and make all family members eagerly gobble it up. For example, with fragrant pumpkin!

Recipe! For 7 tablespoons of cereal, take 250 g of ripe pumpkin, a spoonful of nuts, preferably walnuts, 20 g of butter and a little sugar with cinnamon. The pumpkins are boiled until soft, and the cereal and nuts are fried until golden brown. Add the dry ingredients to the pumpkin and add 150 ml of water. Boil until boiling, salt, add sugar and serve after 3 minutes.

Oatmeal doesn’t have to be tasteless or have an unpleasant consistency. With proper preparation and the addition of other ingredients, the porridge turns out to be aromatic, satisfying and attractive in appearance!

Delicious oatmeal porridge is now very popular among those who are switching to proper nutrition. But in fact, they learned to prepare this product a very long time ago. The Scots were the first to prepare porridge from oats, after which they began to cook it in the Scandinavian regions, and only then appeared on the tables of the Slavs. To prepare it, they most often used very finely ground oatmeal, and only then they learned to make porridge from it using both milk and water.

How is it different from oatmeal?

There is a difference between oatmeal and oatmeal porridge, albeit a very small one. If we consider oatmeal, it is a cereal that is made from whole grains. It takes a lot of time to cook, otherwise it won’t boil. It takes about one hour to cook, while flakes can be cooked in fifteen or twenty minutes. Hercules is just a name that was invented by merchants for oat flakes. They are much more popular due to the speed of preparation. Some types of these cereals can simply be poured with boiling water or even yogurt and eaten immediately.

In terms of caloric content, porridges are almost the same: per hundred grams of oatmeal there are only eighty kilocalories. And there are three hundred and fifty kilocalories in oatmeal porridge.

That is, rolled oats and oatmeal are practically no different. However, when oats are processed and turned into flakes, they become less nutritious. Therefore, in the eighties in America they began to add bran to the flakes, which added fiber and an additional set of useful elements.

The taste of rolled oats is much more delicate than that of oatmeal. It contains a little more fiber. Cooked porridge, both oatmeal and rolled oats, take a long time to digest in the stomach, so they are considered an excellent breakfast for any person. The amino acids found in the porridge help restore protein in the muscles, and fiber can cleanse the body of toxins. In addition, it is recommended to use it for stomach or liver ulcers.

Cooking methods

Although oatmeal porridge is quite high in calories, it is still healthy calories. It contains beta-glucan, as well as long-term carbohydrates. When they enter the human body, they are absorbed for a long time, so they do not turn into fats, but, on the contrary, charge it with energy. When preparing oatmeal porridge, you do not need to wash it, because it is processed directly at the factory and immediately packaged on site. It is better not to use flakes that have stood, as they become bitter over time. You can prepare rolled oats flakes in different ways: simply boil them or brew them with boiling water.

In a saucepan

You need to pour half a liter of purified water, a little salt into the prepared container and put it on fire. When the liquid boils, you need to pour oatmeal into it. It takes about twenty minutes to cook. After which you need to wrap everything well and leave for another half hour. If you want to add any other ingredients, this must be done after it is cooked. This will help the porridge to be saturated with the aroma and taste of the added components, and will also give it a rich taste.

In a slow cooker

It appeared in modern kitchens not so long ago and quickly took a significant place there. A multicooker not only saves time, but also allows you to do your favorite thing while cooking. To prepare oatmeal porridge in it, you need to take half a glass of cereal, a little salt, and one glass of purified water. These ingredients are for one serving. But if necessary, portions can be increased depending on how many people are in the house or how many guests have arrived.

The prepared ingredients must be poured into the multicooker. If you wish, you can throw in a piece of butter.

After this, you need to turn on the “porridge” button and just wait for it to cook. As in the previous cooking method, any other components must be added to the porridge after it is ready. Rolled oatmeal porridge is best combined with honey or berries such as raspberries and strawberries. However, many people also add raisins or dried apricots, as well as nuts.

In the microwave

For faster cooking, you can use the microwave. Although it cooks quite quickly, the oatmeal porridge turns out to be very tasty and aromatic. Before starting cooking, you need to soak one glass of rolled oats in clean water and let stand for ten minutes. Then you need to take a special microwave-safe dish, pour half a liter of water into it and add the infused oatmeal. Then you need to add salt, mix everything well and put it in the oven.

The temperature needs to be set to the highest and turn on the clock for three or four minutes. During the cooking process, you need to stir the porridge every minute to prevent lumps from forming. When it is cooked, it will also need to be wrapped well, and if you want to add something tasty, then this should be done after cooking.

You can learn more about preparing oatmeal porridge in this video.

Oatmeal is healthy and nutritious. “The porridge of English aristocrats” is what many nutritionists call it. I don’t know if the British eat oatmeal every day, but in our family this is a must for breakfast. For convenience, I buy oatmeal flakes rather than oat grains, since they cook faster than cereal.

How to cook oatmeal porridge: add water or milk, add sugar and salt to taste and boil for a couple of minutes. Depending on my mood and immediate preferences, I add fresh herbs and cheese (very tasty!) or raisins and figs to the porridge.

Rolled oats porridge turns out to be very tasty if you cook it in milk and add bananas cut into slices. Hercules in water has less calories, and if you fill the flakes with milk alone, the porridge turns out viscous and very nutritious.

Lately I prefer to dilute the milk with water (one to one) and cook the cereal that way. Hercules porridge turns out tasty and not so dense and viscous.

Cooking steps:

Ingredients:

Oatmeal 1 cup, milk 1 cup, water 1 cup, dried fruits in portions, salt to taste, sugar to taste.

"Hercules" is an extremely valuable product. But to get the maximum benefit and taste, you need to choose oatmeal wisely. Store shelves are filled with various packages of this product, differing in time and method of preparation. But real oatmeal porridge requires time and patience, and, of course, natural sweet helpers.

Properties of the dish

Among the variety of varieties of oatmeal, “Hercules” stands out especially. This type differs from “Petal” and “Extra” in the processing method, which, in turn, affects the cooking time of the dish. Rapid boiling of flakes is characteristic of “Extra”, but it contains much less elements beneficial to the body. It is heat treatment that destroys the existing substances. A more gentle method is used when preparing Hercules. As a result, all valuable substances, led by fiber, are preserved. But you should cook dishes from this type of flakes exclusively over low heat, for about 20 minutes.

When buying cereal, you should not choose what, at first glance, may seem the best because of the price. The maximum benefit will come from correctly selected and high-quality oatmeal porridge. It is worth paying attention to the condition and integrity of the box, the number and time of packaging and, of course, the storage conditions and expiration date.

To make the right choice, you need to pay attention to some points.

  • Exclusively cereal. To prepare a tasty and healthy breakfast, do not choose packaging with additional flavoring additives - sugar, berries, nuts, fruits and other ingredients. They affect the reduction in the benefits of the food product. They also add calories and numbers on the price tag. Interestingly, these porridge packets do not contain rolled oats, but finely ground varieties that do not require cooking - just pour boiling water over them. Such porridge cannot be called healthy!
  • Transparent box. This type of packaging is the best and safest. Right in the store you can examine the flakes by their external condition and the presence of external additives. Only pure cereals are of high quality. You may notice so-called white shavings in the bag, do not be alarmed, these are the remnants of compressed grains. The predominance of such particles is also unacceptable, because here the fiber content is equal to zero.

  • Only white. Acceptable shades are yellow and cream. Brown, dark flakes are not of the best quality.
  • Avoid the cardboard box. Rolled oatmeal is capable of quickly absorbing moisture from the external environment. Packaged in cardboard boxes, it is vulnerable to storage violations, which leads to the loss of the product. Excessive moisture kills valuable elements in porridge. Since you do not know whether the product storage standards were followed, you should discard cereals in such packaging.
  • Different expiration dates. Closed polyethylene bags provide rolled oatmeal with the longest shelf life - up to 1 year. All usefulness and deliciousness are preserved in excellent condition. Cardboard packaging significantly reduces delivery time - up to 4 months.

Hercules flakes have always been considered a healthy product for humans. But do not forget that they are also dietary, as they have a high energy value, which ensures a long-term feeling of satiety. 100 g of cereal contains 352 calories.

BJU: 12.5 g - protein; 6.2 g - fat; 61 g - carbohydrates.

Hercules is a rich source of useful and vital elements for the human body. The flakes contain many essential components.

  • Coarse fiber. Even during processing, some of it remains in the product. It cannot be digested in the stomach, so when it enters the intestines, it acts as a cleanser of waste and toxins. This is the kind of porridge that is recommended during a diet and for gentle cleansing of the body. A large volume of water will help in this matter.
  • Amino acids. Controls normal muscle function by forming proteins in muscle tissue. People involved in physical activity are advised to consume the Hercules product, as Hercules quickly restores muscle tone after strain. It will also be useful for children for proper development and strong muscle mass.
  • Vitamins. Vitamin B is present, as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and potassium. Without these microelements, proper functioning of the heart, muscles, and bone formation is impossible.
  • Gluten. Due to the content of this protein (gluten), the finished porridge can be very stretchy. Once in the stomach, gluten can reduce the effect of acid on internal tissues. People with gastritis, ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems should consume porridge.
  • Carbohydrates. They are the most powerful suppliers of energy to the human body. There are quite a lot of them in rolled oats - 61 g per 100 g. Therefore, it is considered a high-calorie product. But these carbohydrates cannot be called harmful, since they are converted into energy slowly. This keeps you feeling full for many hours.

There are also contraindications to the use of the product.

  • Children's individual gluten intolerance(it is advisable for children to give up porridge in the first year of life). Existing protein can negatively impact your baby's digestion, making the problem worse. It is better to consult a doctor before use to determine if your baby is allergic to gluten.
  • Celiac disease(genetic protein intolerance). An adult has an upset stomach, which entails inflammatory processes, provokes bloating, and frequent urge to go to the toilet. The absorption of nutrients is also blocked.

Cooking rules

You can cook porridge from rolled oatmeal flakes either in water or milk. Sometimes both ingredients are mixed to create a new liquid. Water-based proportions: 1 cup of cereal + 2 cups of water. You can add salt, sugar, butter, and sweet ingredients to the dish. First, the liquid should boil, then add the flakes. Don't forget to stir regularly. To prevent the foam from overflowing the edges of the pan, try removing it from the heat for a couple of seconds.

If milk is chosen as the base, you will need 1 liter per 200 g of rolled oats. After the porridge boils, remove the pan from the heat, cover with a lid and leave to simmer for 10 minutes. Before serving, add a piece of butter. You can also use slices of apples, bananas or nuts.

It doesn’t matter which cooking recipe you prefer, the main thing is to maintain the standard ratio of liquid to product - 3: 1.
