I decided not to shelve the story with the sandbox that I mentioned and talk about the construction process. In addition, there are still warm days of Indian summer ahead of us and, perhaps, someone will even have time to do something similar. :)

My wife and daughters spent almost the entire summer at their grandparents’ dacha. There is freedom there for children. You can walk outside all day, pick raspberries and strawberries straight from the bushes, and generally enjoy your childhood and life. :)

But, no matter how good it is, without the main component of childhood (unless, of course, it takes place in permafrost conditions), the mood of any child will not be the most positive. I'm talking, of course, about the sandbox. So at some point my child remembered that in the city, they say, there is this same sandbox, but in the country, much to our chagrin, there is not.

As a result, after agreeing with my grandmother (our main dacha field marshal), at an emergency family meeting, a decision was made - there should be a sandbox! :)

After wandering around the Internet and reviewing a bunch of sandboxes of various shapes and sizes, I decided to settle on a fairly simple, but functional and convenient option. But since I couldn’t find any diagrams or drawings, I had to do it “approximately as in the picture” :) The photo below was found by me on the Internet and was taken as the basis for construction.

Having estimated the approximate dimensions of the future sandbox, I went to the construction market. I bought boards, timber, wicket hinges and paint.

After I sawed the required number of parts, all that remained was to polish everything and assemble it into a single structure. My faithful assistants helped me cope with these tasks :)

Grinding was done using a grinder and a grinding wheel, which is not entirely correct, since the process produces a lot of fine dust, which clogs literally everything. Next year I want to buy a sanding machine with a dust collector, otherwise cleaning takes almost as much time as the construction itself.

After all the parts were processed, I began assembly.

I extended the timber to which the boards of the side walls of the sandbox were attached, since in the future I planned to dig it into the ground and these “tails” were supposed to serve as supports for the entire structure so that it would not fail.

Having collected everything together, I pulled this colossus out onto the street. It turned out impressive (the sides of the square were approximately one meter and twenty centimeters).

For strength and reliability, I reinforced the corners with the remains of timber.

I went through the first coat of paint. The “legs” of the sandbox were treated with used machine oil.

Well, more precisely, it wasn’t really me who painted the legs... :)

I estimated the location of the pre-painted boards of the future sandbox lid.

Using a grinder with coarse sandpaper, I removed the edges of the boards, giving them a more attractive look.

I fixed the first two boards firmly, screwing them with self-tapping screws. Then I began to assemble the first part of the movable sandbox lid, adding two more boards and attaching the gate hinges.

Something is already starting to work out... :)

Then I started on the second part of the lid. The fact is that this lid is not simple, but with a curious mechanism that turns it into a bench! To do this, I added two more boards and secured them with timber.

I attached two boards, fixed with bars to the previous two boards, using the same gate hinges. As a result, I got this design:

The bars are designed so that when the lid is opened, they rest against the wall of the sandbox and serve as support for the back of the bench.

Thus, our lid folds and turns into a convenient bench.

The fifth and sixth boards are held together by the bars I mentioned above. In the same way I strengthened the third and fourth boards, strengthening them with additional small blocks. Now the boards are not only held on hinges and are securely fastened to each other.

In addition, these short bars protect children’s bottoms from the possibility of being scratched on the hinges, and also serve as a back support for the back of the bench so that it does not fold and fall on the children’s arms and backs. Still, no matter what you say, safety comes first! :)

To prevent the bench from bending under the weight of those sitting, I screwed a small support plate in the center onto the first two boards.

After one side of the sandbox lid was completed, I began assembling the second side.

I decided to make the second half of the lid without a back, thus finalizing and improving the original design. :) The fact is that if an adult suddenly decides to play with a child, it is convenient to do this without climbing entirely into the sandbox, but sitting down on its edge. In the original version of the sandbox, from which I took an example, both sides of the lid had backs, which made it difficult for adults to sit on.

In my version there are no such problems. :)

I closed the corners with a wooden corner so that the ends of the boards would not absorb moisture, and in general it looks much neater this way.

Having completely assembled and painted the entire structure, I went to look for a shovel... :)

Having dug a pit around the perimeter, I lowered the support legs of the sandbox into it so that the side walls lay on the lawn.

What could be more beautiful than a garden filled with flowers? Only a garden where children play! Kids are big fans of fun outdoor adventures, and it is very important to take them away from the bustle of the city at least on weekends. How to place the building correctly

Surely not only your children, but also their friends will relax at your dacha. This means that the sandbox must be spacious. There are several principles for placing a sandbox on a site that should be followed during its construction.

1. Visibility from any point on the site. Children should always be in sight so that in certain cases adults can come to the rescue. The sandbox should always be visible and accessible.
2. Hygiene. It is better not to build a sandbox under trees. Fallen leaves will clog the sand, and bird droppings will create additional problems.
3. Protection from the sun and drafts. Direct sunlight is more harmful than beneficial for a child, especially if he stays in open areas for a long time. Drafts can lead to illness.

Position the sandbox as conveniently as possible

When building structures for children, it is imperative to adhere to existing standard standards. As a rule, such structures are usually made of wood, as the most environmentally friendly material. The sandbox usually has a square shape with sides measuring from 2.5 to 3 meters. For that. to fill the structure, you will need about 2 cubic meters of sand.

The best material for the body of a standard sandbox will be a pine board 25-30 mm thick.

Simple Sandbox Installation Process

Before we get started, we first need to determine what our sandbox will look like. If this is your first time doing this kind of construction, then it is better to stick to a simple, standard design. Select a small area in your garden, 2 x 2 m in size, over which tree branches will not hang, and begin to improve the place for games.

The dimensions of our structure will be 1.7 X 1.7 m. This sandbox is suitable for several children to play and takes up little space in the garden.

Simple sandbox enclosure

Prepare the site for the future structure. To do this, take a cord and pegs. Mark the perimeter of the future sandbox and dig a hole inside the fence, the depth of which will be 25 cm. The removed layer of fertile soil can be useful in beds, flower beds and other areas.

Now you need to strengthen the base of the sandbox. It is advisable not to limit yourself to digging a hole: sand, when mixed with the ground, will become dirty, lose its appearance and will need to be changed frequently. The garden sandbox must be clean, which means you need to take care of the solid foundation.

A cushion of sand will help level the soil surface. Place a 5 cm layer of sand at the bottom of the hole, compact it well and cover it with special material.

Paving slabs can be used as such a material, but this option is quite expensive. If you use plastic sheeting, after the first rain you will have to disassemble the sandbox to remove accumulated water. Therefore, drainage holes will need to be made in the film. The same goes for plywood if you decide to seal the base with it.

The best option is to use agrofibre or geotextile. These materials allow moisture to pass through perfectly and will not release moles or earthen insects.

Construction

Prepare bars measuring 450 x 50 x 50 mm. They will need to be placed in the corners of the structure. Be sure to treat the bars with an antiseptic, because they will be buried 15 cm into the ground. You can use bitumen for these purposes.

For each side of the box, assemble a shield 2.5 cm thick and 30 cm wide from pine boards. It can be made either from one wide board or from several narrow ones.

The most important thing is that you need to carefully treat the surface of the boards, removing all knots, jags and splinters, so that children do not get injured later when playing.

To make it comfortable for children to be in the sandbox, make sides. Lay 4 boards around the perimeter of the structure, having previously planed them. The sides can be used as seats, stands for toys, buckets, and display cases for Easter cakes.

Now let's talk about some simple ones. But useful additions. You can upgrade the usual version and prudently add a cover to it, which will be useful for protection:

• sand from moisture and rain;
• wind, which can carry debris and leaves into the sandbox;
• pets who will probably want to make a toilet for themselves.

A shield made of boards attached to the bars will serve as a cover. It will need to be picked up and put away before play. The baby himself will not be able to do this. To make his task easier, make a door cover in two parts: put together two panels of the required size, fasten them on hinges and attach handles.

Please note: if it is not possible to make a cover from boards, replace it with film or an awning. By stretching the material and securing it with an elastic band or stones, you will provide protection to the sandbox.

Final preparations: put up a canopy and fill up with sand

A canopy, especially in the form of a fungus, can be a very necessary element of a sandbox. Under such a fungus you can hide from the rain, and children will be reliably protected from direct sunlight. You can also attach a table to it for added convenience.

It is better to make a canopy from wood. The leg will be a beam 100 X 100 mm and 3 meters long. To make the leg stable, dig it into the ground to about a meter depth. Be sure to treat the wood with an antiseptic.

For the mushroom cap, prepare triangular panels from boards. Nail them from the inside to the leg, and cover the outside with thin plywood. For a hat, a width of 2.5 meters will be sufficient.

You can make a canopy in the form of a roof. To do this you will need two beams and two rectangular boards. They should be nailed at an angle to create a gable roof and secured with strips of appropriate length.

River sand is best for children's games

Now let's talk about choosing sand. River sand is preferable for children's games: it is fine, clean, without foreign impurities. You can buy quartz sand at a building materials store. But in any case, it must be carefully sifted.

   The length of the legs of three-year-old children is still not enough to cross the side above 20 cm. For older children, this is not an obstacle, so you can make the side of the sandbox higher - 30 cm.
2. Number of children.
   If the child is alone, a 120x120 cm sandbox with sides 20 cm high may be enough. Their friends will come to visit the children and play together in the sand and build castles or play with shapes. A sandbox 170x170 cm is enough for three children under 5 years old. These are standard sizes, but nothing prevents you from making the structure even larger.
3. The depth of the sandbox for the game.

4. The height of the entire structure.

Preparing the base
