Simple flatbreads made with water and flour in a frying pan are quick and tasty, and also convenient. Does it ever happen to you that you have prepared a meal, and at the very last moment you suddenly discover that there is nothing in the house?
a piece of bread? I must admit, this doesn’t happen often, but it does happen. What to do? Run to the store (especially if it’s not near your home) for just one loaf of bread? Agree, you don’t always want to get ready and go to the supermarket.

Of course, a bread maker can also help out, but only if you have time for it, because it takes about 3 hours to cook bread. What if there is no time at all? In this case, an excellent recipe for flatbreads in a frying pan with water, which can be served instead of bread, helps me out. I hope the recipe is useful to you too, because it’s a real lifesaver!

Although such flatbreads are usually prepared with fermented milk products - whey or kefir, believe me, they work just as well with water!

Moreover, sometimes the same thing happens with fermented milk products as with bread - they run out at the most inopportune time. But there is always water. That's why I use this recipe for quick (perhaps the fastest I know) scones. After all, all you need is just 15 minutes of time, and the sunny rounds will already be on the table.

In addition, such flatbreads are much healthier than yeast baked goods, especially if part of the regular flour is replaced with rye or whole grain flour, or bran. You can also add various herbs, onions (fried or green), aromatic spices like oregano, pieces of paprika, cheese, mushrooms, prunes, dried apricots, sun-dried tomatoes... In general, whatever you want. And even in the case of frequent preparation, but with different fillings, such flatbreads will not get boring - after all, they will have a new taste every time. And, as an option, additional ingredients can be placed inside the flatbread itself, and then you will get a flatbread with filling. So, are we ready?

Ingredients

  • Flour – 500 g (that’s 3 heaping glasses)
  • Baking soda – 0.5 tsp. (you can replace it with 20 g baking powder)
  • Citric acid - a pinch (if you are using baking soda rather than baking powder)
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp.
  • Water – 1 glass
  • Vegetable oil - for frying

How to cook flatbreads with water in a frying pan

  1. First, I measured out the flour. I have a scale in my kitchen, so I use that. If you don’t have scales, then just measure out in glasses - that’s 3 heaped glasses.
  2. Next I added salt to the flour.
  3. Added baking soda with citric acid (you can use baking powder).
  4. Then she poured water.
  5. And I kneaded the dough for the flatbreads in water until it began to stick to my hands, and I got a beautiful elastic bun.
  6. I made small cakes. I placed them in a heated frying pan with vegetable oil. And fry it under the lid over medium heat (on both sides).
  7. Then I put them on a plate to cool slightly.
  8. It is best to store cooled tortillas in a bag to prevent them from drying out.

That's all, as you can see, it took just a little time to prepare a worthy replacement for bread - flatbreads made from water and flour, which are perfect for first courses, second courses, and even tea! So now, when you suddenly run out of bread in the house, you know what to do - quick and tasty flatbreads.

How to cook unleavened flatbreads from choux pastry made with flour and water, fried in a frying pan

Prepare a strainer, dough bowl and frying pan. Place water in the kettle to boil.

A quick way to make flatbreads without yeast.

Sift the flour through a sieve into a heat-resistant bowl; we will pour boiling water over it. If you are using salt, now is the time to add it to the flour.

Carefully pour boiling water in a thin stream, please do not get burned. Hot items in the kitchen must be handled following all safety precautions.

Without waiting for it to cool, knead the dough, first using a spoon, and then gather it into one lump with your hands.

Place the bun on a floured cutting board. The dough should rest for a few minutes. In the meantime, prepare a knife and rolling pin, you will need them.

We form our rested bun in the form of a sausage with a diameter of 5 cm, cut into pieces of 1-2 cm, depending on the size of the future cake.

Form each piece into a ball and roll it into a flat cake no more than 0.5 cm thick. Make cuts in several places.

The dough is ready. Let's start frying. Heat the frying pan well, grease the bottom with oil using a brush, do not pour it out of the bottle, you can pour too much or underfill.

Advice. Use a frying pan with a thick bottom; the tortillas will fry well in it and not burn.

Place the flatbread in the frying pan; when one side is browned, turn it over to the other side. And so on, fry all the tortillas.

The finished flatbreads turn out beautiful, fluffy and crispy; if you fry them in a dry frying pan, they will be without a crispy crust, but absolutely soft, in a word, excellent.

These flatbreads can be used instead of bread, or made into sandwiches with any filling: cheese, herbs, sausage. You can use various sauces and gravies, jam and marmalade.
