  2. Use sugar and water to make syrup. Mix the components and bring to a boil 2-3 times, removing the foam cap. Do not allow the syrup to boil. The finished product must be cooled;

The fact that the liquor bears the name of the pharmacist Josef Vitus Becher is no coincidence. His experiments with herbs, oils and tinctures in 1805 (with the participation of the English doctor Frobrig), two years later allowed him to create a new medicine for stomach pain "Karlsbader English Bitter". The pharmacist started selling the medicine.

The recipe was inherited by his son Johann in 1841. The heir changed the discreet packaging of the medicine to a flat green glass bottle with a bright label, improved the equipment for its release and ... passed the recipe to his son Gustav (1890). The grandson of the famous pharmacist expanded production by registering the trademark "Johann Becher".

So Becherovka turned from a medicine into a liquor.

In 1901, Rudolf, Gustav's brother, became "at the helm" of the company, who brought the production of liquor to the international level. The royal lady of the Austrian court liked its taste so much that the order of the king every year amounted to about 50 thousand liters of liquor.

After the end of the war, in 1945, the Becher family was expelled from Czechoslovakia, and the company was nationalized, giving a new name to the liquor - Becherovka. The name Johann on the bottle was changed to Jan. In the 1950s, Vaclav Lupinek saved the plant from closing.

Secrets of composition and production

The liqueur formula is traditionally hidden. Only two people in the world know the technological process and the exact composition - the technologist of the plant and its director. However, it is reliably known that the "miracle potion" contains a composition of about 20 herbs mixed in a canvas bag and aged for a week in alcohol. It is this tincture that becomes the basis of the future drink. It is aged for 2-3 months in oak barrels together with sweet water and bottled in glass bottles. At the same time, the importance of using water only from Karlovy Vary is noted.

Not a single craftsman managed to create a completely identical drink. So, the true Becherovka is, so to speak, an exclusive thing. But homemade alcohol similar to the original (imitation) can often be found in private cellars. And not in vain - after all, despite the fact that the Becherovka liquor is produced on an industrial scale, it has not lost the status of a “medicine”. This is explained by the many useful components that pass from herbs and oak into its composition.

Action on the body:

Very often, when it comes to the benefits of any alcoholic drink, skeptics twist their lips - they say, this cannot be! And this is despite the fact that most alcohol was originally created as a medicine and was sold only in a pharmacy. So it was with Becherovka.

Harm from alcohol is caused to a greater extent not by alcohol itself, but by its overestimated dose. So, if you have Becherovka on hand, then you, using it correctly and moderately, can help the work of the stomach and nervous system.

To drink liquor for this you need 20 ml before dinner (once a day!). This will save you from flatulence, belching, heartburn, feelings of fullness and heaviness in the digestive organs, loss of appetite, etc. In addition, this dose will help you get rid of feelings of anxiety, relax.

A contraindication to the use of the drink will be its individual intolerance and alcoholism. It will be just perfect if you decide to take liquor as a medicine, consult a doctor.

Types and varieties:

If you have not yet chosen your favorite carlo - Varovsky liquor, you should know that Becherovka is not a separate type of drink, but a common name behind which several liquors are hidden.

The first one is "Original". This is a classic recipe from 1807! Having tried, in it you can feel the shades of anise, allspice, cinnamon, cardamom, orange peel. The alcohol content of the liquor is 38%.

Another species is "Lemon". This is a fragrant drink, which is more often chosen by ladies. It has stunning citrus notes on the palate (lemon is especially noticeable). The alcohol content in it is 20%.

The next liqueur is KV 14. This composition has significantly less sugar and red wine is present. The abbreviation "KV" means "Karlovy Vary". The alcohol content is 40%.

The novelty of 2014 was the Ice & Fire liqueur. In it, the bitterness of herbs interrupts the tenderness of citrus fruits, replaced by an “icy” aftertaste. It is insanely good in combination with ginger ale or tonic. The alcohol content of the drink is 30%.

At the same time, all five types of liquor can be purchased only in the Czech Republic; not every Becherovka is sold in other countries. Only the classic "Original" and (rarely) citrus "Lemond" became export options.

Drinking methods:

Becherovka intrigues not only with its composition, but also with the ways of drinking. Several are known. And everyone is considered correct.

  1. Pure. This traditional method is recommended by the liquor manufacturer. You will only need glasses and Becherovka chilled to 5-7 ° C. 20 ml of liquor is poured into a glass and drunk either as an aperitif ("KV 14") - before a meal, or as a digestif (other types of liquor) - after it. In the latter case, to muffle the bitterness of herbs, you can serve an orange sliced ​​​​and sprinkled with cinnamon (without peel) with the liquor.

Drink the drink slowly, savoring.

  1. With beer. The method does not turn the drink into a cocktail: liquor is drunk first (in a gulp from a glass), beer is drunk second (slowly from a glass). Most often it is recommended to take light beer.
  2. For treatment. There are two options here. The first, as mentioned above - 20 ml before meals. The second - 1-2 tbsp. liquor is poured into tea or coffee. Both options are used only 1 time per day.
  3. Diluted. Any drinks that interact with liquor form a cocktail. But the topic of cocktails will be touched upon below, and now we will only describe the drinks that Becherovka perfectly “gets along” with (in any proportions). These are juices: from cherries, apples or currants, tonic or soda.

Home Becherovka.

Fans of experimentation and homemade alcohol will certainly want to try making this liqueur on their own. Of course, we do not have Karlovy Vary here, but you can try to create something similar to a Czech drink. The advantage of this creative process will be that the drink is a fake, which in the end may turn out to be even better than the original.

To create Becherovka, you will need alcohol diluted with water up to 55%, or vodka, the strength of which is raised to the specified percentage with the same alcohol (1 liter of vodka plus 200 ml of alcohol from a pharmacy).

In case you can’t find alcohol, prepare liquor with vodka, because after all, the strength of Czech liquor is mostly below 40 degrees. I think there will not be a particularly fundamental difference whether your Becherovka will turn out 40% or 38% of the fortress.

In fact, even if good (!) Moonshine turns out to be the basis (without odors, impurities, etc.), the product will not suffer - after all, you will not reproduce the true original anyway.

If you have the opportunity, then buy spices in an Indian shop, but if not, ordinary ones from the supermarket will do. But they should not have unpleasant, fetid odors or be out of date.

In addition, prepare all the necessary utensils for cooking in advance. It must be made of glass (no plastic or plastic).

Recipe

Prepare:

  • alcohol diluted to 55% - 1.2 l or alcohol (200 ml) + vodka (1 l)
  • granulated sugar - 150 grams (or 90 grams of fructose)
  • water (spring or bottled) - 250-300 ml
  • zest from an orange (without a white layer) - a strip of 5 cm
  • anise - 2 grams (1 tsp without a slide)
  • black or allspice - 7-10 peas
  • cardamom - 1 gram (2-3 boxes)
  • cinnamon (preferably in sticks, not ground) - 5 grams
  • cloves - 15-20 pcs.

We prepare in this way:

  1. We are preparing the tincture. Spices need to be poured with alcohol, corked and kept without access to sunlight for 7 days. Shake the mixture from time to time (preferably every day), pass through the filter after a week. The smell of tincture should be rich, pleasant.
  2. We cook syrup. Pour sugar into water and bring to a boil 2-3 times (do not boil!), Remove the foam that forms. Ready syrup must be cooled, and only then used.
  3. Mix syrup and tincture. There is one very important rule here: we pour the tincture into the syrup, and not vice versa. We do this slowly, gently stirring, and stand for another week. Classically, you need to age in oak barrels, but in the absence of these, it will be enough to “let it rest” in glass bottles.


Becherovka prepared in this way costs 3 times cheaper than purchased in a supermarket. It will perfectly complement tonic (for example, Schweppes) or soft drinks - tea, coffee, Sprite.

Cocktails with Becherovka
